Patricia Gross

Adjunct Professor of Law

Patricia Gross is the Chief Public Defender for the Jackson County (Illinois) Public Defender’s Office, a position she has held since 1996. In this position, she supervises the Office’s assistant public defenders and support staff; manages budget and general office operations; handles death penalty and other murder cases, Class X felonies and sex offenses; and serves as guardian ad litem in abuse and neglect cases, including termination of parental rights.

Professor Gross previously served as the senior assistant public defender for Jackson County (1992–96); regional counsel for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services in Marion, Illinois (1990–92); assistant city attorney for the City of Du Quoin, Illinois (1989–92); assistant state’s attorney for the Perry County (Illinois) State’s Attorney Office (1987–90); and assistant defender in the Office of the State Appellate Defender in Mt. Vernon, Illinois (1983–87). She has taught trial advocacy as an adjunct professor for SIU School of Law since 2000.

She is currently a member of the Capital Litigation Trial Bar, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Southern Illinois American Inn of Court, and the Jackson County Bar Association. Professor Gross holds a B.A. degree from Southern Illinois University and a J.D. degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
