Symposium will explore issues in organ donation - Pete Rosenbery
Two people who were involved last year in what became a national debate on organ transplants and children will be part of a discussion later this week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. “From Critical Shortage to Critical Mass: Addressing the Lack of Organ Donations” will examine possible ways to increase the number of organ donations and create a fair and sensible system that makes the best use of available organs.

Chemerinsky to present Lesar Lecture - Peter Rosenbery
Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Law, and an expert on constitutional law, will discuss the U.S. Supreme Court and civil rights in light of two milestone anniversaries. Chemerinsky will present the 2014 SIU School of Law Hiram H. Lesar Distinguished Lecture at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 27, in the law school auditorium. He will examine the legacy of a landmark case and statute when he presents “The Supreme Court and Civil Rights on the 60th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

Dervan quoted in article about growing number of exonerations in cases where innocent defendants pled guilty
"Plea bargaining dominates the criminal justice system," Dervan said. "In dealing with more minor offenses - offenses for which the individual is likely to receive time served (or probation) if they plead guilty - in those cases the incentive to confess to the crime even if you haven't committed it is extremely high. The reward for saying you had done something is to go home; the punishment for failing to say that is to stay in jail and wait to have an opportunity some point in the future to reveal innocence at trial."
