SIU Law Alumna Elizabeth Gastelum
The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin recently published a story by Josh Weinhold about SIU Law alumna Elizabeth Gastelum. Gastelum is currently Associate General Counsel to Lieutenant Governor Sheila J. Simon. The article chronicles how, with focus, drive and determination, Gastelum has accomplished great achievements despite formidable obstacles. She lost virtually all of her hearing ability when she was just 18 months old.
Gastelum expressed that her time at SIU School of Law was the first time an institution made learning easy; she actually understood “every word spoken in class.” SIU Law hired someone to transcribe lectures and discussions. (read more about Elizabeth's success at SIU in this article by Eric Welch that was written when she was awarded Women's Bar Foundation Scholarship in 2007)
After graduating from SIU Law, Gastelum started a private practice helping the deaf and hearing impaired with legal issues. When Lt. Governor Simon took office in 2011, Gastelum was hired as a legal research attorney and, because of her stellar work, she quickly advanced to become the associate general counsel and Springfield bureau chief.
