This 40-hour, intensive training will provide the understanding of the mediation process and the skills necessary to allow the participants to competently provide mediation services, especially in family disputes. The participants will be provided with lecture, discussion, materials, skills-building role play and feedback. The role plays will be conducted in small groups coached by experienced mediators. The following specific family mediation topics and issues will be addressed: domestic violence, custody, child support, the dynamics of family systems, child development.
The principal trainer is C.J. Larkin, an experienced mediator with more than 20 years of practice and 12 years of law school and private mediation training experience. She is an attorney, mediator, educator and trainer. C.J. has a J.D. from the University of Missouri – Columbia, School of Law and a Master’s in Political Science from the University of Missouri - St. Louis.
C.J. is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the Washington University School of Law and the Administrative Director of the School of Law’s Alternative Dispute Resolution programs. She teaches Introduction to U.S. and Comparative Dispute Resolution Processes, Mediation Theory and Practice and Advanced Mediation and Advocacy. She co-coaches the Law School’s Negotiation and Representation in Mediation competition teams.
She has provided 1000+ hours of mediation training to attorneys, social workers, educators, managers and community volunteers and frequently presents workshops at the ABA-ADR , ACR and MBB annual conferences. C.J. has been an active volunteer and trainer in the community mediation field for more than 15 years, including founding a neighborhood mediation program in Fox Park neighborhood, St. Louis City.

$1,100 – SIU LAW Alumni and public interest attorneys
$850 (includes a one year membership to DRI) – participant must agree to provide 1 pro bono family mediation per quarter for 2 years (a total of 8 pro bono mediations)
