Duties: |
Preparing criminal cases with emphasis in magistrate court prosecutions including DWI, domestic assault, and drug cases; trying matters to the court or jury; investigating, preparing, and presenting cases to the grand jury; pre-trial motion practice and appellate work; preparing and representing the State at juvenile proceedings including abuse and neglect cases, review hearings, and delinquencies; researching and drafting legal pleadings; working with and providing legal advice to Minnehaha County Commissioners, department heads, and including drafting correspondence, legal opinions, contracts and agreements, easements, bid specifications, and civil and criminal pleadings; appearing on behalf of the State's Attorney at public and inter-governmental forums, speaking events, educational functions, public organizations, task forces, and legislative bodies; representing the State in involuntary civil commitment proceedings; and training law enforcement on issues such as search and seizure, courtroom testimony, and trial preparation. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
Current licensure in the state of South Dakota. Demonstrated interest in prosecution. |
Required Qualifications: |
Graduation from an accredited law school and attainment of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, and admission by the Supreme Court of South Dakota to practice law in the state of South Dakota; or be licensed to practice in any other state and able to sit for the next available South Dakota Bar examination; or be a recent graduate, eligible to sit for the next available South Dakota Bar examination. Working knowledge of civil and criminal law and methods and practices of pleadings, court procedures, and rules of evidence; principles, methods, materials, and practices utilized in legal research, general law, and established precedents. Ability to prosecute cases. Ability to speak and write effectively in the preparation and presentation of legal matters. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, other agencies, and the public.

Insurance
*Coverage effective 1st of the month following 30 days of employment
*Available for employees and dependents
* Health/Prescription Minnehaha Countys health benefit plan offers low deductibles with two network options for coverage: Avera or Sanford. The county pays for 70 percent of the premium rates. Pharmacy benefits included.
* Dental Minnehaha County offers dental insurance through Delta Dental which covers 100 percent of diagnostic and preventative services.
* Life Insurance - Minnehaha County provides a $15,000 basic life insurance policy for every full-time employee. Optional supplemental life insurance can be purchased for employee, spouse, and dependent children.
Retirement
* Retirement Plan Minnehaha County participates in the South Dakota Retirement System. Employees receive a 6 percent match (8 percent for certified law enforcement). Other SDRS benefits include long term disability, family, spouse, and optional expanded spouse benefits. Individuals are 75 percent vested in match before 3 years of service and full vesting match at 3 years.
* Deferred Compensation Plan Employees may choose to save additional funds toward retirement on a pre-tax basis through our supplemental retirement program.
Paid Time Off
* Vacation Leave Pro-rated accrual of up to 10 days per year.
* Sick Leave 3.7 hours bi-weekly for full time employees.
* Holiday Leave - 10 days per calendar year.
* Wellness Leave Additional wellness days off can be earned each year.
* Funeral Leave Up to three days off in the event of an immediate family member.
