Established North County sole practitioner looking for a full
time associate. We practice in the areas of DWI, traffic,
criminal, personal injury and workers’ compensation. Here is
what we are looking for and what our firm is about: Preferably a
native St. Louisan who can bring in business. Associate attorney
will receive a percentage of the business he or she generates.
Some familiarity with Spanish would be helpful. Computer skills
needed. The ability to write a business letter is more important
than the ability to write an Appellate Brief. Prior legal
experience is not a necessity, but some minimal experience with
the court system in the St. Louis are would be an asset. We
really are not looking for someone whose sole
interest/experience is researching and writing briefs but for
someone who has had some interaction with the court system and
who has at least some conception of how a law office is run. We
need someone who can get along with co-workers, prosecutors,
court clerks, other attorneys and insurance adjustors. If your
conception of law and projected career path lies in the area of
“transactional” type practice where most of your time will be
spent reviewing and composing documents, do not bother to
respond. Self-starting skills needed. The ability to maintain
in-person, telephone and written correspondence to clients. The
ability to keep current files. A willingness to go both day and
night court appearances. We offer and informal and friendly
environment. On days when there is no court, dockers and polos
are typically worn with shorts in the summer. If you are looking
for a formal, stuffed shirt environment, we are not the right
firm for you. You will have to put in an occasional Saturday
between the hours of 10:00 am and Noon. While the head of the
firm comes in every Saturday, it would be nice to occasional
have a Saturday off. We are looking fro a well-rounded person
who realizes that there is more to life than the law. The head
of the firm is an amateur historian whose specialty is the
political history of Germany and Eastern Europe, as well as
being very avid mountain bike rider and enjoys working out. We
will pay for a gym membership in the Florissant/Hazelwood area
as well. I think it is pretty clear what we are looking for. If
you would rather practice law with books, contracts, SEC filings
and be dressed up in a suit daily on the 90th floor of some
downtown building, do not respond. However, if you want to learn
how a small law office runs and go into court and meet clients,
prosecuting attorneys, court clerks and Judges, please apply.
Salary based on experience plus paid medical insurance. Please

Michael Ferry, Executive Director
Gateway Legal Services, Inc.
Attorney
200 North Broadway
Suite 950
Saint Louis, MO 63102
08/12/05

Our new attorney will be given a great deal of responsibility
very quickly. Through transfers of existing cases and acceptance
of new ones, our new attorney will soon be handling a caseload
of from 200 to over 300 SSI and Social Security disability
cases, depending on experience. Such high levels are made
possible, in part, by our highly structured case handling system
that assigns many of the more time-consuming case development
tasks (such as obtaining medical records, copying files, and
responding to most calls from clients) to support staff. This
system leaves our attorneys free to focus more on hearing
preparation, hearings held before Administrative Law Judges,
post-hearing briefs, and other tasks that require attorney
attention rather than support staff. Of course, such high
caseload levels are also made possible, in part, by the
dedication of our attorneys and support staff, their commitment
to providing legal representation of the highest possible
quality, and their willingness to work hard to ensure that level
of quality. About Gateway Legal Services, Inc. Gateway Legal
Services, Inc., is an innovative legal aid program located in
St. Louis, Missouri. Like other legal aid programs, Gateway is
not-for-profit and tax-exempt [Section 501(c)(3)]. Unlike other
Missouri legal aid programs, Gateway does not accept government
funding and does not seek other kinds of subsidy funding.
Gateway is designed to be self-supporting. We concentrate most
of our efforts on representing lower-income claimants who are
trying to obtain or maintain Social Security disability and/or
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Of our more than
1,500 open cases, more than 1,200 involve disability or SSI
benefits. Such benefits secure a modest but steady stream of
income for clients, helping to stabilize lives, keep families
together, and keep people from becoming or continuing to be
homeless. Most of our cases involve initial applications, but
some involve termination of benefits or claims of overpayment.
In general, we represent people in initial applications on a
reduced-fee, contingent-fee basis (with fees taken from
back-benefits awards), and we represent people in termination
and overpayment cases without charge. We represent benefits
clients at all levels of the administrative law system and in
the federal courts. We also handle a small number of consumer
protection and other cases. We currently have a full-time staff
of twelve, including six attorneys and six support staff. Our
offices are in the St. Louis Place building at 200 N. Broadway.
Please visit our Web site for more information. Gateway Legal
Services, Inc., is an equal-opportunity employer. We also
provide an exceptional benefits package, including vacation and
sick leave, long-term disability, medical and dental insurance,
life insurance, legal malpractice insurance, training, bar dues,
and parking. Deadline for Submission: August 12, 2005
Qualifications: Applicants must be attorneys currently licensed
in any state or who will sit for a state Bar examination in July
2005. No previous experience is required.
