1976
Appellate Justice James Wexstten ’76 of the 5 th District in Mount Vernon has been appointed to the board of directors of the Lawyers’ Assistance Program.

John Ryan '76 was recommended by peers to be among the TOP LAWYERS '08 in Illinois.

John Brewster,'76, a partner in the law firm of Winters Brewster Crosby & Schafer LLC in Marion, has been named city attorney for Herrin. Brewster, who serves on the board of the Bank of Herrin and chaired the board of Southern Illinois Healthcare, is a former member of the SIU Board of Trustees. Brewster replaces Patricia McMeen, '81, longtime Herrin city attorney who died in May.

1978
Roger Clayton ‘78 , a senior partner with the law firm of Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, has been elected President of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys which comprises more than 500 healthcare attorneys in the state. Clayton is the Chair of Heyl Royster’s statewide healthcare practice group. He has defended more than 700 medical malpractice cases and recently co-authored the chapter on Trials in the Medical Malpractice Handbook published by the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Clayton also recently co-authored a chapter for the Law of Medical Practice in Illinois published by West Publishing. He is a frequent speaker on healthcare issues, medical malpractice and risk prevention.

The law firm of Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen has more than 100 lawyers among its offices in Peoria, Springfield, Urbana, Rockford and Edwardsville, Illinois. It is the largest law firm in the state that is based outside of Chicago. The firm provides legal services for businesses, professionals, healthcare organizations, universities, insurance companies, and other major institutions.

Bill Harazin '78 N.C. attorney, wins International Section Award; SIU Law, Illinois State alumnus
The International Law & Practice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association recently recognized Bill Harazin of Raleigh as the 2009 recipient of the John J. Dortch International Service Award. The award was presented in conjunction with the section's annual meeting and CLE. Scott Hile who chairs the ILPS Section presented the award.

The Dortch Award was established to recognize lawyers who (1) have served as a role model for international law attorneys, (2) have demonstrated the highest level of ethical standards, and (3) have shown professional competence.

Harazin has been a member of the section since its inception in 1992 and served as chair in 1998-99. Most recently, he has been instrumental in the creation of the NCBA Lawyer Exchange and served as the delegation leader of the inaugural exchange to Taiwan in 2006. He also was a delegation member for the 2008 exchange with Argentina.

In addition to his extensive record of service within the NCBA, Harazin has served as chairman of the board for the World Trade Center North Carolina and president of the N.C. World Trade Association. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for International Understanding and a past vice chair and board member of the
International Visitors Council/World Affairs Council.

He has served on the International Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, the International Committee of the N.C Board of Science & Technology and North Carolina District Export Council. He is a former member of the 2006 Foreign Service Selection Board for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and a charter member of the board of directors of the N.C. Center for World Languages and Culture.

 

1979
Anthony Abate ‘79 has been named for inclusion in the 2008 Florida Super Lawyers for his practice in the areas of construction and business litigation. Mr. Abate is a shareholder at Abel Band and practices in the firm’s litigation and alternative dispute resolution practice groups. Mr. Abate is board certified in construction law by the Florida Bar and focuses his practice on all aspects of construction disputes including contracts, liens, breaches of contract, and negligence, in addition to representing clients in all forms of business litigation and arbitration. Mr. Abate is admitted into practice in Florida and Illinois, before the Supreme Court of the United States of America and the United States District Court for Middle District of Florida.

William Enyart ’79 was named state adjutant general in Illinois.  In that position he will command 13,000 members of the Illinois National Guard and will serve as director of the Illinois Department of Military Affairs and as chief adviser on military matters.

1980
John C. Buford ‘80 and his wife Caryl, both retired from the US Army in 2007 at the rank of Colonel. They are now living in their hometown of Orangeville, IL, where they met when he was 9 and she was 7 years old. John, a member of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Advisory Council, has guided five local properties onto the National Register of Historic Places. Caryl and John have restored three of the historic buildings in their hometown, all on the National Register, and in their spare time, run a small dinner theater in one of them.

Mary Rudasill ’80 retired June 30, 2009 from the SIU School of Law after 23 years of service.

Barnes & Thornburg LLP attorney Mark D. Stuaan ‘81 was recently appointed by the president of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association to serve as general chair of the Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for 2007-2008.
A partner in Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Indianapolis office, Stuaan is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department as well as the Appellate and White Collar Crime practice groups. He focuses his practice in white collar criminal defense, and represents and advises clients in connection with civil and criminal matters in state and federal district courts.
Stuaan is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association as well as the Indianapolis Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in the states of Indiana and Illinois.
Stuaan received his bachelor’s degree from Wabash College in 1978. He earned his law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1981, during which time he was selected to the Order of Barristers and served as editor-in-chief of the SIU Law Journal.

Inspector Kevin D. Eack ‘83, Senior Terrorism Advisor for the Illinois State Police was chosen by the FBI to serve a Director's Fellowship in Counter Terrorism in Washington, D.C.  He was selected as one of two police senior executives for the 2009 FBI Director's Fellowship. Insp. Eack will serve as a fellow for a period of six months through July, 2009, before returning to the Illinois State Police in charge of the Office of Counter Terrorism.

Broadstripe (formerly Millennium Digital Media) announces that it has hired Bruce E. Beard ‘84 as its general counsel. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Beard was senior counsel with Cinnamon Mueller, a Chicago based law firm.

After 19 years as a partner at Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP, William J. Bohler ‘84 recently left to become a partner at 1100 lawyer international firm Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale and Dorr LLP ("WilmerHale"), where he will continue to focus on litigating and trying complex patent infringement and related matters.

Cozen O’Connor member Peter A. Lynch ‘84 has been awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his meritorious service as deputy rule of law officer, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lieutenant Colonel Lynch received his medal at Camp Pendleton from Lieutenant General Helland, commander of the Marine Corps forces central command, Marine Expeditionary Force. Resident in the firm’s San Diego office, Lynch concentrates his practice in representing individuals, companies and insurers impacted by catastrophes to include subrogation and recovery, environmental matters, contracts and other civil matters. Lynch is a weekly Internet columnist for interFIRE, a legal advisor to the San Diego County Fire Investigators Association, and a legal columnist for California Fire/Arson Investigator Magazine, published by the California Conference of Arson Investigators. He has also published more than 65 articles on fire investigation and litigation and is a frequent lecturer on these topics. Lynch was awarded a California Lawyer Attorney of the Year Award (CLAY) in the Pro Bono category in recognition of his representation of a woman whose son was killed while serving as a fire fighter. The award is given to those attorneys “who have left a lasting impact on the way those who follow them will practice.” The Brett Alan Laws Act was enacted and signed by the governor to protect emergency response personnel based on Lynch’s work.

Michael J. Maslanka '84, (Chicago, IL) has been appointed to the ISBA's Section Council on Human Rights, and Standing Committee on Bar Services and Activities. He is also the current Treasurer of the American Prepaid Legal Services Institute in affiliation with the ABA.

Steve Stone ‘90 attorney and partner in the Marion law firm of Howerton, Dorris & Stone was admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.  Stone received notice in June, 2007 of his admission.  Lawyers are admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States upon demonstration of good moral and professional character.  He joins his partners Robert Howerton and Douglas Dorris as members.  SIU School of Law will host a U.S. Supreme Court swearing in ceremony for an alumni group admission in May, 2009.

Alice Noble-Allgire ‘90 was a recipient of the 2008 ISBA Board of Governors Award.

Rod Irvin '90 died suddenly August 10, 2008.  Irvin was the current State’s Attorney of Hamilton County in Illinois.

The Class of 1991 is in the process of setting up a scholarship that will be given to a law student at the annual awards ceremony. Classmate Beth Boggs ‘91 has agreed that when the fund reaches $12,500 that she will match that amount and the scholarship will be endowed.

Connie Fraizer ’93 is teaching a divorce education class for parents.  This course meets the four hour mandatory Parent Education requirement in the state of Illinois. The goal is to assist divorcing and/or separating families accomplish the transition in a healthy and functional manner, while reducing the trauma to all individuals involved, particularly the children. Participants learn about the impact of divorce on families and children, the legal process, and mediation of custody and visitation issues. Grandparents/ Caregivers may also attend.

Richard L. Saville, Jr., Robert J. Evola ‘97 and Ethan A. Flint are proud to announce the opening of their law firm, Saville, Evola & Flint, L.L.C.  The firm will specialize in representing seriously injured plaintiffs, particularly victims of mesothelioma and lung cancer from asbestos exposure, and victims of leukemia from benzene exposure.  Although the firm will handle cases nationwide, they will focus their practice in Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky.  Their office is located on 322 East Broadway in Alton, Illinois.

Samuel L. Fieber ’97, has been killed in a tragic oil field explosion.
CARMI, Ill. — Samuel L. Fieber, 49, died Oct. 29, 2008, in Crossville.
He was an attorney and owner of French Creek Oil Company, First Mortgage, Eldorado Inc., Tri-State Supply, Lee Land Inc. and Lake View Farms and was a member of First Christian Church of Grayville.
Surviving are wife, Lisa; sons, Max and Lee; parents, Louie and Marilyn; sister, Audrey Roberts; and a brother, Lawrence.

On November 4 2008 Lee Ann Hill ’97 was appointed to be associate Judge in McLean County.  The Circuit Judges of the 11th Judicial Circuit voted to fill the vacancy with Hill. Hill was selected from among 19 applicants for the position.  Hill graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1997. She began her legal career as a McLean County Assistant Public Defender that same year.  She will be sworn in on Dec. 5 and take the bench on Dec 8, 2008.

David Greer ‘98 has moved to Chisinau, Republic of Moldova to assume the position of Chief of Party for the USAID Regulatory Reform and Tax Administration Reform Project, a three year USAID technical assistance project implemented by DAI, Inc., a Bethesda, Maryland based Development Consulting Firm. David had previously performed similar duties with Emerging Markets Group, Ltd., leading the USAID Ukraine Commercial Law Center Project in Kyiv, Ukaine.

Kamran Khan ‘98  has joined the Law Department at Philip Morris USA in Richmond, Virginia.  Kamran will help manage litigation matters for the company.  Prior to joining the Philip Morris USA Law Department, Kamran was a Partner in the National Products Liability Division at Shook, Hardy and Bacon in Kansas City, MO.  Kamran had previously represented Philip Morris as national counsel.

April Troemper ‘98 ,has recently been appointed to a vacancy on the 11 member Prairie Capital Convention Center board.  Her interim term will expire in April, 2009.

Vickie J. Brady ‘98 was one of the eleven attorneys from Baird Holm LLP that was selected by their peers and appeared for the first time in The Best Lawyers in America 2007. Vickie works in health care law.

Donna White McCann '98 was elected as State's Attorney in Pulaski County, Illinois.  She took office on December 1, 2008.  Her office is located in Mound City, Illinois.  She lives in Olmsted, Illinois.  The Assistant State's Attorney is Lisa M. Casper ‘06. 

Another SIU School of Law graduate has joined the growing list of our alumni serving as judges. Frank Janello ’99 and Lori Jo Chaney were united in marriage on April 5 th, 2008.  Frank is a managing associate attorney for Blatt, Hasenmiller, Liebser and Moore, LLC in Bloomington.

2001

Vihar R. Patel ‘01 completed a Masters of Law in Intellectual Property (IP) from DePaul University School of Law in May of 2006 and wrote two papers.  He co-authored the “Federal Circuit Review of Claim Construction Cases 2005” available at http://iplac.org/Pages/2005_report.pdf and authored "Are patented research tools still valuable? Use, intent, and a rebuttable presumption: A proposed analysis for exemption from patent infringement under 35 USC § 271 (e) (1)" pre-print copy available at http://law.bepress.com/expresso/eps/1466.   He continues to work as a full time Assistant Attorney General for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in Chicago.  Vihar would like to transition into an IP position and teach IP law.

Sarah Mallory Williamson and Michael Olson were united in marriage on April 12, 2008.  Sarah is working at the Department of Children and Family Services.

Carmody MacDonald P.C. announces that Michelle N. Dibadj ‘02 has joined the firm as an associate. Ms. Dibadj concentrates her practice in the area of medical professional defense litigation.

Peter Olson ’02 is running for the ISBA Board of Governors Cook County (Under age 37).

Lucy Goffinet ‘02 (FKA Lucy Rhodes-Moore) has been elected State Judge in Perry County, Indiana, after beating the incumbent candidate in the primary election.  She is the first female judge in Perry County and the youngest judge to be elected in the State of Indiana. 

After clerking for Judge Herndon in the federal court in the Southern District of Illinois, Theresa Phelps ‘02 joined the law firm of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh.  Theresa left Lewis Rice to accept a position at a new Clayton-based branch office of a Quincy, Illinois firm, Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell.  The biggest news is that Ryan and Theresa added a new addition to their family, a daughter.

Matthew J. Goetten ’02 who was re-elected as Greene County State’s Attorney in November, 2008 anticipates being called to duty soon as an Army judge advocate.  He has recommended that Carrollton attorney Craig M. Grummel ’07 serve in his absence by contract.

Craig Newbern '03 and wife Candice are pleased to announce the birth of their second son, Craig F. Newbern, III (Tre'). Tre' was born on August 7, 2008.
Craig, currently residing in Lexington, Kentucky, is an Assistant Attorney General with the Kentucky Attorney General's Office.

Tambra Cain ’03  was sworn in to the US Supreme Court in the 1st SIU School of Law alumni group admission.

Thomas Maurice Miller '03 passed away August 8, 2009.  He had been working for the TN Department of Health and had never lost a case during his tenure there.  During the last couple of years however, he was also suffering from chronic pancreatitis and could find no relief from any medical treatment.  Tom loved what he was doing and his wife Sharon wanted the professors and graduates from SIU School of Law to know just how much he enjoyed the time he had with you all. Bradley Hammond '05 married Kelli Tande of Bismarck, North Dakota in Estes Park, Colorado on August 25, 2007.  They reside in Naperville, Illinois.

Schuerman will practice in the areas of medical malpractice, construction litigation, and general litigation. She was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 2006. Prior to joining Tabbert Hahn Earnest & Weddle, LLP, Schuerman was an associate in a private law firm in Indianapolis. A 2006 cum laude graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, Illinois, Schuerman was on the Dean's List each semester and received two academic scholarships. She participated as a staff writer and articles editor for the Southern Illinois University Law Journal. Schuerman was also a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and served as its fundraising chair. She was a visiting student during the 2005-06 school year at the I.U. School of Law- Indianapolis. Schuerman received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, in 2009. Active in the community, Schuerman serves on the board of directors of Heritage Place an volunteers for the Protective Order Pro Bono Project.

Lisa M. Casper ’06 is the assistant State’s Attorney in Pulaski County.  Her office is located in Mound City, Illinois. 

 

2007
Matthew J. Goetten ’02 who was re-elected as Greene County State’s Attorney in November, 2008 anticipates being called to duty soon as an Army judge advocate.  He has recommended that Carrollton attorney Craig M. Grummel ’07 serve in his absence by contract.

2008
Andrew R. Roszak ’08 earned his degree in May, he will begin a year-long David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship.  A dual-degree graduate student, he also received a master’s degree in public administration.  Roszak’s fellowship, one of only two granted this year, will provide an opportunity to learn about the political system through exposure to public and private sector roles in health policy development.

Brian J. Lambert ‘08 joined the law firm of Sivia Business & Legal Services, P.C. on Jan. 2 as an associate.

Lambert graduated cum laude from Southern Illinois University School of Law. There, he was vice-president of Phi Delta Phi and a member of the Environmental Law Society.
Lambert has experience in the areas of business law, family law, criminal law and general civil litigation.

While in school, he interned at the office of the Illinois Attorney General and primarily worked on consumer protection issues. He also interned at the office of the Jackson County Public Defender where he assisted clients on misdemeanor and traffic cases.

Additionally, Lambert was involved in the SIU School of Law Domestic Violence Clinic where he assisted clients in obtaining orders of protection, while aiding them in filing for divorce through Land of Lincoln Legal Services.

He graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where he received a bachelor of science degree in Broadcast Journalism.

He obtained his law degree from Southern Illinois School of Law and is licensed to practice law in Illinois. He will be preparing to take the Missouri Bar Exam this February. Lambert is a member of the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Associations, and the Madison County Bar Association.

Lambert is originally from Blue Island, and he currently resides in Carlyle.
