Dean Cynthia Fountaine recognizes the importance of preparing students for practice in an increasingly global legal environment. She has supported expansion of SIU Law's international programs, including development of a specialization in International and Comparative Law, as well as expansion of opportunities for students to learn about other legal systems and study abroad. She has been active in international scholarly and professional organizations. She has spoken about US legal topics to international audiences, and she has spoken at conferences on the topic of globalization of legal education.
Dean Fountaine teaches a course on Legal Globalization and Comparative Law that focuses on current and historical topics of legal significance in Europe with particular emphasis on Germany. Students spend the first several weeks of the semester learning about German history, culture, and legal systems, as well as about global governance with particular emphasis on international judicial tribunals. Then, during Spring Break, the class travels to Germany and other countries in Europe. Read more here.

Dean Fountaine was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Germany at the Universität Bayreuth during the 2009-2010 academic year. While there, she taught courses on U.S. Constitutional Law and Common Law Legal Analysis, as well as gave lectures on various topics. In addition, she worked with the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Initiative in Amman, Jordan as a legal education expert working with law faculties throughout Jordan to help improve legal education in the country.

Connecting Students to the Global Community
Dean Fountaine is the coordinator of the ABA Section on International Law International Human Rights Committee Russian Law Students Project; as such, she coordinates Skype sessions between Russian law students at Izhevsk University and U.S. attorneys, judges, and law students.
In 2011, Dean Fountaine and Professor Lucian Dervan traveled to Heidelberg, Germany to present a one-week lecture series as part of International Week 2011 at SRH Heidelberg University. Dean Fountaine and Professor Dervan were accompanied by five Southern Illinois University School of Law students who attended classes at SRH Heidelberg University during the conference and participated in various German cultural and legal events as part of the program. Dean Fountaine is a member of the Southern Illinois Chapter of the Fulbright Association. She serves on the Fulbright Scholar Discipline Peer Review Committee. In addition, she is active in the International Association of Law Schools, serving on its Faculty Innovative Curriculum Awards Committee, Speakers Committee, and Law School Admissions Council Student Speaker Awards Committee. She serves on the International Committee of the Southeastern Association of Law Schools.
