Center for Health Law & Policy

The purpose of the Center’s health law and policy program is to enhance legal education in the rapidly evolving field of health law, with a focus on research dissemination, student leadership, scholarship, and interdisciplinary community service.

The Center supports an extensive array of opportunities in health law education, including:

  • Innovative and core curricula, such as Rural Health Law, Scientific and Medical Evidence, Health Policy Law, Public Health Law, Mental Health Law, Bioethics, Medical Malpractice, and the Medical Malpractice Clinical Rotation
  • Specialization in Health Law with a demonstrated concentration of health law courses
  • Dual Degrees with the SIU Schools of Medicine (JD/MD), Business (JD/MBA), and Social Work (JD/MSW)
  • Student editing and publication of commentaries in the international, peer reviewed Journal of Legal Medicine in partnership with the American College of Legal Medicine
  • Law and Medicine Society student leadership organization
  • Law Students for Reproductive Justice student chapter
  • National Health Law Moot Court Competition, hosted annually by SIU School of Law
  • Coaching of law student teams in health law competitions across the United States
  • Clinical and externship opportunities with an emphasis in health law, including semester-in-practice health law and policy programs, partnerships with the SIU Legal Clinic, and partnerships with the national award winning rural Medical Legal Partnership of Southern Illinois between Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance and Southern Illinois Healthcare

The Center’s interdisciplinary partnerships have benefited the campus, alumni, and region, with programs such as the:

  • Cross-appointed faculty between the SIU School of Law and School of Medicine Department of Medical Humanities
  • Health Policy Institute, with national speakers, supported by First Health Medical Provider Class, represented by SL Chapman LLC, Southern Illinois Healthcare, and Sandberg Phoenix & Von Gontard, PC
  • John and Marsha Ryan Bioethicist-in-Residence, supported by the Garwin Family Foundation
  • Expert Witness training by Center faculty, SIU law students and graduate students in the SIU School of Social Work Trauma Based Behavioral Health Fellowship Program
  • Interdisciplinary Ethics Day, a joint program for all first year law, medicine, physician assistant, and social work graduate students at SIU
  • Global Summer Continuing Legal and Medical Education courses (e.g., Germany, Australia)
  • Partnerships with the American College of Legal Medicine (Journal of Legal Medicine, National Health Law Moot Court Competition)
