SIU Law Externs at Cook County State's Attorney's Office
Four students from the Southern Illinois University School of Law recently completed summer externships at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The students spent the summer working side-by-side with veteran prosecutors from various areas of the office, learning first-hand about the hard work that goes into prosecuting cases. The summer program culminated with a presentation by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez describing her prosecution of Patrick Sykes, or the Girl X case, as it was known in the media. State’s Attorney Alvarez walked the students through the entire case, from the occurrence of the crime to Sykes’ sentencing of 120 years.
