Lucian E. Dervan

Professor Dervan is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and is a member of various ABA committees, including the Criminal Justice Section and White Collar Crime Committee. In 2012, Professor Dervan was appointed Co-Chair of the ABA Criminal Justice Section’s Academics Committee. The committee is charged with connecting legal educators in the field of criminal justice with one another and with the practicing bar. The committee is also charged with providing legal educators with opportunities to engage more deeply with issues of law and policy relevant to the functioning of the criminal justice system. In 2012, Professor Dervan was also appointed Chair of the Conference Planning Committee for the first ABA Criminal Justice Section Conference on International Internal Corporate Investigations. The event took place in Frankfurt, Germany in December 2012. An article regarding the conference appeared in the ABA CJS Leadership Connections newsletter, available here.

In 2011, Professor Dervan was appointed to the Advisory Committee of the NACDL White Collar Criminal Defense College at Stetson. He also serves as a faculty member at the program. The NACDL White Collar Criminal Defense College is an annual multi-day training for practitioners in the field of white collar criminal defense. Students at the college learn key advocacy skills and substantive white collar law during the program.

Professor Dervan is a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and serves on the Criminal Justice Section Working Group. He also engages in pro bono activities and has performed work for organizations such as Legal Aid, Habitat for Humanity, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

At SIU School of Law, Professor Dervan is chair of the Southern Illinois University School of Law Scholarship Development Luncheon Series and serves on the International Programs Task Force and Personnel Committee. He also serves as a moot court and trial advocacy judge, faculty mentor to first-year students, faculty advisor, dissertation committee member for the Political Science Department, and professionalism day faculty member.

Professor Dervan has also arranged for several guest speakers to lecture at SIU School of Law, including Acting Deputy Attorney General Gary G. Grindler, who served as the 2010 commencement speaker, and William Potter, former head of the Rule of Law Department of the Office of High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
